Frequency domain analysis of a dimensionless cubic nonlinear damping system subject to harmonic input

    Get PDF
The effects of cubic nonlinear damping on the system output spectrum are theoretically studied through a dimensionless mass-spring-damping system model subject to a harmonic input, based on the Volterra series approximation. It is for the first time shown theoretically that the cubic nonlinear damping has little effect on the system output spectrum at high or low frequencies but drives the system output spectrum to be an alternative series at the natural frequency 1 such that the system output spectrum can be suppressed by the cubic damping

Evaluation of output frequency responses of nonlinear systems under multiple inputs

    Get PDF
In this paper, a new method for evaluating output frequency responses of nonlinear systems under multiple inputs, defined as a sum of sinusoids of different frequencies, is developed. The method circumvents difficulties associated with the existing “frequency-mix vector” based approaches and can easily be applied to investigate nonlinear behaviors of practical systems, including electronic circuits, at the system simulation and design stages. Application of the method to the analysis of nonlinear interference and distortion effects in communication receivers is studied, and specific procedures are proposed which can be directly used in practice for this analysi

A novel approach for nonlinearity detection in vibrating systems

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a novel approach for nonlinearity detection in vibrating systems. The approach is developed based on a new concept recently proposed by the author known as nonlinear output frequency response functions (NOFRFs) and the properties of the NOFRFs for nonlinear systems with multiple degrees of freedom (mdof). The results of numerical simulation studies verify the effectiveness of the approach. Nonlinear components often represent faults in practical mdof systems including beams. The proposed approach therefore has significant potential in the fault diagnosis of practical mdof engineering systems and structures

Nonlinear output frequency response functions for multi-input nonlinear volterra systems

    Get PDF
The concept of Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions (NOFRFs) is extended to the nonlinear systems that can be described by a multi-input Volterra series model. A new algorithm is also developed to determine the output frequency range of nonlinear systems from the frequency range of the inputs. These results allow the concept of NOFRFs to be applied to a wide range of engineering systems. The phenomenon of the energy transfer in a two degree of freedom nonlinear system is studied using the new concepts to demonstrate the significance of the new results

Identification of Nonlinear Parameter-Dependent Common-Structured models to accommodate varying experimental conditions and design parameter properties

    Get PDF
This study considers the identification problem for a class of nonlinear parameter-varying systems associated with the following scenario: the system behaviour depends on some specifically prescribed parameter properties, which are adjustable. To understand the effect of the varying parameters, several different experiments, corresponding to different parameter properties, are carried out and different data sets are collected. The objective is to find, from the available data sets, a common parameter-dependent model structure that best fits the adjustable parameter properties for the underlying system. An efficient common model structure selection (CMSS) algorithm, called the extended forward orthogonal regression (EFOR) algorithm, is proposed to select such a common model structure. Several examples are presented to illustrate the application and the effectiveness of the new identification approach

Parametric characteristic analysis for the output frequency response function of nonlinear volterra systems

    Get PDF
The output frequency response function (OFRF) of nonlinear systems is a new concept, which defines an analytical relationship between the output spectrum and the parameters of nonlinear systems. In the present study, the parametric characteristics of the OFRF for nonlinear systems described by a polynomial form differential equation model are investigated based on the introduction of a novel coefficient extraction operator. Important theoretical results are established, which allow the explicit structure of the OFRF for this class of nonlinear systems to be readily determined, and reveal clearly how each of the model nonlinear parameters has its effect on the system output frequency response. Examples are provided to demonstrate how the theoretical results are used for the determination of the detailed structure of the OFRF. Simulation studies verify the effectiveness and illustrate the potential of these new results for the analysis and synthesis of nonlinear systems in the frequency domain

Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions (NOFRFs) are a new concept proposed by the authors for the analysis of nonlinear systems in the frequency domain. The present study is concerned with investigating inherent relationships between the NOFRFs of two masses in nonlinear MDOF systems. The results reveal very important properties of a class of nonlinear systems, and have considerable significance for the application of the NOFRF concept in engineering practices

Linear parameter estimation for multi-degree-of-freedom nonlinear systems using nonlinear output frequency-response functions

    Get PDF
The Volterra series approach has been widely used for the analysis of nonlinear systems. Based on the Volterra series, a novel concept named Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions (NOFRFs) was proposed by the authors. This concept can be considered as an alternative extension of the classical frequency response function for linear systems to the nonlinear case. In this study, based on the NOFRFs, a novel algorithm is developed to estimate the linear stiffness and damping parameters of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) nonlinear systems. The validity of this NOFRF based parameter estimation algorithm is demonstrated by numerical studies
